Rumfitt’s Theory of Predication∗

چکیده
Before Frege there was no satisfactory way of explaining both the validity of the inference of (B) from (A) and also that of the inference of (C) from (B). Frege’s solution has several components, but one key element is his ability to decompose (B) in at least two different ways. The unasserted proposition contained in (B) can be seen as obtained by attaching the expression of generality ‘somebody’ to the incomplete expression ‘ξ loves everybody’, but it can also be obtained by attaching the expression of generality ‘everybody’ to the incomplete expression ‘somebody loves ξ’. The inference of (B) from (A) can now be seen as an instance of existential generalisation and the inference of (C) from (B) can now be seen to be an instance of universal instantiation. Dummett gives an interpretation of incomplete expressions as being patterns, but in a fairly recent paper Rumfitt [13] has championed Geach’s interpretation of incomplete expressions as being linguistic functions. Unfortunately, Rumfitt’s account has several flaws. The most notable of these is that his theory cannot account for the validity either of the inference of (B) from (A) or of that of (C) from (B). I agree with Rumfitt ∗This paper was presented at the Fifth European Congress for Analytic Philosophy (ECAP5), held in Lisbon from the 27th to the 31st of August 2005

Application of Genetic Algorithm in Development of Bankruptcy Predication Theory Case Study: Companies Listed on Tehran Stock Exchange
The bankruptcy prediction models have long been proposedas a key subject in finance. The present study, therefore, makes aneffort to examine the corporate bankruptcy prediction through employmentof the genetic algorithm model. Furthermore, it attempts to evaluatethe strategies to overcome the drawbacks of ordinary methods forbankruptcy prediction through application of genetic algorithms. Thesa...
متن کامل‘Not’ Again
This paper revisits some views about negation I defended in two early papers. Some of the themes of those papers have been developed sympathetically in recent work by Tim Smiley, Lloyd Humberstone and Ian Rumfitt. However, Rumfitt and Peter Gibbard have both criticised arguments I offered in defence of Double Negation Elimination (DNE), against a Dummettian intuitionist. I reconsider those argu...
متن کاملWeb Services Evaluation Predication Model based on Time Utility
Current predication models fail to consider the time utility of the web services evaluation predication and treat the different historical ratings in the same way. To solve this problem, we put forward web service evaluation predication model based on time utility. In the model, naïve quantification method and complex quantification method are proposed to achieve the distinct and proper time ut...
متن کاملA Theory of Relevant Properties 1: Reflections and Definitions
In the paper a theory of relevant properties is developed. The theory permits us to distinguish between properties that are relevant to an object and the properties that are irrelevant to it. Predication is meaningful only if a property is relevant to an object. On the base of introducing a special negative type of predication as opposed to usual sentential negation, a new notion of generalizat...
